Over the last 12 weeks, I believe my photography skills have improved tremendously. At the beginning of this class, I had a very expensive camera from my mom with a lot of buttons that I didn't know how to use. The first few days of taking photos and notes were somewhat overwhelming. I couldn't tell the difference between aperture and shutter speed and not being able to walk with my camera made taking good photos in large quantities very difficult. However, I did have a lot of fun taking photos for the first few assignments, like the composition assignments and the Shutter/Aperture assignment. I was proud of the photos at the time, though now I see they could use a little more imagination. These two photos are from the composition assignment, lines on the left and symmetry on the right. Because I was restricted to only taking photos at school, I couldn't put the amount of creativity into my photos that I wanted to. But once my ankle healed and I wasn't on crutches anymore, a lot of my photos started to improve. I also started to learn a little more about my camera and the different ways I could focus it and change how I was capturing my subject. During this era, I took a lot of photos that were pretty true to what the actual object looked like, just with a certain amount of photoshopping. I had some experience in photoshop from taking Graphic Communications last year, so I wasn't as daunted by a computer program than I was by an actual camera. Below are some of the photos that I took that I mostly just left alone. Finally, towards the end of the tri, I started leaning more into photoshop, especially after we did the numerous photoshop assignments like the School Context and Open Tutorial. I realized that I could make my photos a whole lot more interesting by using photoshop to enhance them. Also around this time, we got the demo for light painting. I was very excited to try this out, but after about 30 minutes, my crew of friends and I realized that light painting is actually really difficult. However, I was able to pull a few good photos from the light painting project that I'm rather proud of, and I was able to use photoshop to make those even better. Below are some of the photos that I took once I realized that photoshop wasn't just for changing levels and lighting on my photos, most notably the black and white week. However, what was probably the least challenging for me were the photoshop assignments. Again, I had some familiarity with photoshop from last year so for a lot of the projects, I has minimal problems. I had a lot of fun on some of the Open Tutorial assignments and on the Multiple Me in particular. Though it wasn't as much of a challenge, I really think that my photoshopping skills have increased and I m definitely better with many of the tools offered by photoshop, like the clone stamp tool, image resizing, layer masks, and composition of photographs in photoshop. Below are a few of my favorites. Overall, I think it is obvious that my skills have grown exponentially. I really enjoyed this tri in digital photography and I look forward to taking more pictures and improving more in the future.
